March is National Nutrition Month.

What a great time to focus on our nutrition, a healthy diet can help us prevent sickness. As the saying goes, “you are what you eat”. When I think of this, it reminds me that when I eat healthy, I feel healthy.

I need to exercise self control, not give into cravings, and remind myself to eat healthy. Like rewire my brain so that I make a habit out of not eating junk.

Sugar decreases the immune system, and causes us to crash, resulting in lack of energy.

The healthier we eat, the more energy we have.

Let’s look at what eating healthy means.

We need protein to heal, and for our muscles. Healthy proteins are: Chicken breasts and without skin, fish (I like salmon and tuna),  beans and lentils,  nuts, seeds (I like almonds, and sunflower seeds), and one egg a day, in case it causes high cholesterol, and beef 90% lean.

Let’s dive into fruits and veggies. I love fruits and vegetables.  You should have at least 5-9 servings a day. Fruits and veggies give us vitamins and minerals. They help prevent cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. They are a great antioxidant. They also give us fiber, and prevent constipation. The more veggies and fruits that I eat v.s. carbs, the better I feel!

Whole grains: I like quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal with no sugar. Should have 5-6 servings a day.

Dairy is important for bone health and vitamin D. 3 cups of dairy a day. I like dairy a lot. Examples of healthy dairy are: High fat greek yogurt, fat free or low fat milk, reduced fat, or low fat cheese.

Example of good fats are: Avocados, I heard they are good for the brain, (I love avocados), coconut oil, Chia Seeds, cheese, sesame oil, and olive oil.

  1. I agree totally — when it comes to fruits and vegetables, they are pretty much as good as it gets nutrition wise.and the effect(s) they can have on your body can be extremely impressive for things that are generally seen as quite common and are usually taken for granted lol

  2. Yes it should be a lifestyle but these “Months” or Health “Days” etc are a concerted effort to draw concentrated attention/awareness to a particular issue in hopes that people would atleast take a moment to consider these practices, with the optimism that those who don’t will gradually begin to at some point, or atleast be reminded of why it’s important that they should.

So I can still see them serving an interesting role in that regard.

  3. Without a doubt! Well written article.

The body is a machine, there are many moving parts, and proper treatment of them is necessary for correct functioning!
    Fail and you get dysfunction.

    Thank you for sharing!

  4. It is definitely a learning curve to find that balance of eating all of the major food groups.
